The National Assembly comprises 22 members elected from constituencies and 11 members elected nationally under a system of proportional representation.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The Seychelles consist of 40 mountainous granitic islands and just over 50 smaller coral islands. </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The islands have a pleasant tropical maritime climate with heavy rainfall.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">The economy depends heavily on tourism, which employs about one third of the labor force. Fishing has expanded, and tuna and prawns are major exports. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Seychelles rupee.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">The islands became a French colony in the middle of the 18th century, were ceded to Britain in 1814 and gained independence in 1976. The PM – Albert René – led a coup against President James Mancham in 1977, and established a one-party socialist state. Attempts to overthrow René, including one involving South African mercenaries (1981), were unsuccessful. Multi-party elections were held in 1992.</span></text>
